Posted on February 6, 2015 by Admin under Studio portrait

It has taken me a long time to get this done but I think its totally worth the wait. The logo is done by Josh from ClearBrand, who’s a customer came to the studio for his family portraits. A special mention to Toa Di who done an initial design of the logo thou I didn’t use it I love the colour which I used.

Portrait of Bo – Chow Chow

Posted on January 6, 2015 by Admin under Studio portrait

Bo is a Chow Chow, very much a lion look like dog. He is only 2 years old but was very well behaved in the studio. The session took less time than I anticipate but the photographs are fantastic.

Jade’s Makeover shoot

Posted on November 14, 2014 by Admin under Studio portrait

It was a very busy weekend working with Gini from TrulyColours. We done the party on Friday then a makeover studio shoot on Saturday afternoon. It was hectic but real fun.

The makeover is Jade’s 21st birthday present from her aunty who purchased the voucher from the website. She has lots of outfits with her and a vintage microphone which she used when she was in a musical.

Leon was in the studio a couple of weeks ago for his personal fitness training website PR photographs. It was really a good session with the use of different lighting to really emphasise his build. I used the high key white to start with ime wearing the outfits with his logo on. this is perfect for his website. I then moved onto the grey background with highlights. The result is a set of stunning images that we are both very happy with. Another very happy customer.

From the screen grab below you can really see how the images look in the website.

Nailbyliga’s PR photography Berkshire

Liga is very pleased with the first time we work together on the photos she use for her nail competition in London, sadly we did’t not win. We don’t think much of the winning images. Liga came back again with a totally different idea and a totally different nail art and we begin to work on another set of fantastic images.

This time, Its Audrey Hepburn, we have our model dressed in black inspired by the iconic images. We have the pipe, the chunky necklace and black glove. The images is a high key with very soft light. The lighting wasn’t the most difficult one to do but the nail this time is more reflective which make the lighting just a bit tricky, especially using high key.

Using high key soft light, putting the nail work against black glove really works.

We did spend a fair bit of time trying to get the position of the pipe, the hands and the chunky pearl necklace in the right position. I think the result is a decent images that we are very happy with. I then handed her a vintage camera to hold, I thought the style would suit it.

I am really happy with the result, especially the photograph that shows her beautiful eyes and and artistic nail work that Liga spent so much time on.

Dean the magician

Dean is a part time magician who is also a toast master, first time I met him was in the studio when he wants some images for his website, he wants something different from most of the magician pictures you see. I come up with something with a bit more style. Using props and more artistic lighting with muted colour tone. The result is a set of image that we both very proud of, not only it was fun to work on something a bit different, I was entertained by his magic trick during the shoot.

I always try something new and a bit different when working on PR commissions, I suggested to him that he should turn his back with a hand full of “Kings” reach around to his back. I though that really ties to the fact that he is a magician and there should be an element of mystery. I put the halo effect on the grey background and med key(towards low key lighting. The result is my best image on the shoot. He is extremely pleased with it as well.

We also played with shallow depth of focus as well, which is another way to add mystery. I suggested using colour pop, which just the card in colour. Usually I would say it is a bit old fashioned but intros instance, it really works. It does take a bit time to get the position of the card in the right place, one of those photos that looks easy but really not.

Beautiful painted nails.

Posted on October 1, 2014 by Admin under Corporate and PR, Studio portrait

Few weeks ago I met Liga, who is a nail artist and she mentioned she is entering a competition and need some images for her work. She ask me to photograph the model with her nail painted. I always enjoy working on interesting projects and this one is on the money. Photographing the model with beautifully painted nail then we adds bubbles in the mix

We have done 2 sets of images, one with bubbles and another without the bubbles, I want to give it a vintage look, with the vintage umbrella and mid-key lighting. I want to skeleton of the umbrella to contrast of the colourful painted nails. The umbrella happens to be a diffuser for the hair light too. Me and Liga are very happy with the result.

Going for the vintage look, without smile, the skeleton of the umbrella really adds something to the image

I think the first image is the best of the first set, without the smile.

Going for the vintage look with bubbles, I thought it would be nice to have a bit smile. which really works, the colour of the bubble really adds something.

The second images is the the second set where we add the bubbles, its tricky to get the bubbles in the desired positions, as you might imaging, so we just basically tried and tried till we get what we want. We both love the result.

Sadly we did not win but we are not giving up, Liga is coming back next week to do another session. Really looking forward to it.

Corporate portraits with a difference

Posted on September 12, 2014 by Admin under Corporate and PR

Got a call from a consulting firm PBA couple of weeks ago ask for me to do some high key portrait for them, I initially thought they want traditional, very business like. I was wrong, they want something totally opposite, they want something fresh and fun. The idea is to attract young and dynamic people to the company. So they asked for different poses and facial expression. It was a really fun shoot, I can have a bit fun with my models and use more contrast in the lighting rather than the very soft light I would use in a more traditional business portraits

The location set up

To set up a location high key is relatively simple, it does require a big light source that can be placed very close to the subject to product a more wrap around light, avoiding too much contrast on the face. I use the large Rotalux as my main light, remove the white diffuser and placed it very close to the backdrop

The High ley backdrop is achieved with using another flash head and place it directly behind the paper backdrop, turn the power up to make sure it will burst through and white paper. Its really simple, thanks to Kevin (who is sort of my mentor/really good photographer friend) teach me this trick when I was doing a school portrait with him one day.

The result is an instant high key lighting with just 2 lights and in a confined space, which normally requires at least 3 lights to do it. One thing I learn from this assignment is that I should add a reflector on the side just to balance out the shadow a but better.  Obviously it is for single person, thou might be able to squeeze 2 person on the back drop at a push.
